Our Homeland / Kazoku no kuni (2012)

Based on the director's own experience, Our Homeland follows a Korean family living in Japan, of which the father (Masane Tsukayama) decided to take North Korean nationality because of his strong belief decades ago. In 1997, Sonho (Arata Iura), the son of the family who was sent to North Korea under a "repatriation program" with the promise of a "paradise" free of discrimination, returns to Japan for the first time in 25 years to seek treatment for his brain tumor due to the difference in medical technology between the two countries. Allowed to stay for only three months and closely monitored by a North Korean officer (Yang Ik-Joon), Sonho is welcomed and embraced by his family and old friends but his father, who is still sticking to the belief but also feeling guilty about sending his son to North Korea at the same time, while Sonho's younger sister Rie (Sakura Andô) develops the aversion to North Korea and its political ideas.

Unfortunately, he finds out that his girlfriend is already married and has a child, and decides to spend the remaining time in the restaurant with friends: a son of an oligarch Konstantin (Konstantin Kryukov), beginner actor Artur (Artur Smolyaninov) and hip-hop artist Timati. When their lunch is coming to the end, it appears that no one has money to pay the bill, except Konstantin's dollars which do not accept for payment. The rapper is decided to exchange currency at the nearest exchanger, that will cause troubles. As the former exchanger belongs to the Armenian (Tigran Keosayan), Timati sets out in search of another, but runs against a nazi skinhead gang. Saving his own life, the hero hides in Konstantin's flat, where Ostap Bender-like swindler Dani (Deni Dadaev) in waiting him. Meanwhile, his friends cannot wait anymore and Artur is sent off. Before he can exchange, he is allured by the film director (Fyodor Bondarchuk) and prepares for shooting, but misses the actor-bus and leaves with gastarbeiters to demolish the Rossiya Hotel. Konstantin hands over his last dollars to Aleksei, but he also fails and falls in love with a young traffic victim Nastya (Agniya Ditkovskite). After all that, despaired Konstantin raises noise in the restaurant, as a result he gets jailed by the militsiya. Luckily for him, the mates do not abandon a friend and rescue him from captivity.

We know this from a glimpse of a license plate, the craftsman architecture of the two houses, and the mature, rich landscapes in between. The one commercial street in town is only seen in the reflection of a store window, a shot of a non-descript auto-yard, or the tunnel of a tree-lined suburban sidewalk. The lush, wooded landscape is understood as an immediate presence in the domestic and professional lives of the characters; a steep hill, railroad tracks, a rushing stream, and a path over an old steel bridge are revisited again and again by the characters in their capacities as lovers, parents and friends.
