Sting: Live at the Olympia Paris (2017)

Sting is one of the few artists who has been able to craft a solo career that is even more successful than their already outrageously successful career as part of a band. With over 100 million albums sold courtesy of his work with both The Police and his later solo offerings, Sting's concerts aren't so much "what will he play?" as they are "what won't he play?", since the choices are so vast. This appealing April 2017 concert in Paris at the City of Light's iconic Olympia venue was ostensibly in support of Sting's 57th and 9th album, but as can be gleaned by the set list reproduced below, it's really like a tour through his long and varied career. The concert is more like an "unplugged" outing than a typical arena rock offering, and it finds Sting in excellent voice backed by an energetic assortment of musicians which includes his son, Joe Sumner.

Dune (1984)

Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi

David Lynch's baroque rendering of Frank Herbert's detailed, complex, and deliberately paced epic science-fiction novel is a muddled but visually stunning affair. It's the year 10,191, and the desert planet Dune has been taken over by the Harkonnens, oppressive conquerors who desire the precious spice that lies beneath Dune's arid sands. The story concerns the attempts of a young warrior messiah, Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan), to lead the native inhabitants in an uprising against the evil empire–and battle the giant man-eating worms that guard the coveted mind expanding -and life prolonging- spice.

Starring: Kyle MacLachlan, José Ferrer, Sting, Jürgen Prochnow, Francesca Annis, Leonardo Cimino
Director: David Lynch

The Police Certifiable (2008) 720p BluRay PROPER DD5.1 x264-SEMTEX

Posted on November 10, 2012 | One comment

The Police: Certifiable (2008)

If you were born anytime after the mid-'80s, you may not realize just how massive the Police really were. In the late '70s and early '80s, this trio was not just big, or even huge, but monolithic. They ruled the airwaves, they ruled the sales charts, and they ruled this newfangled thing called MTV. Made up of drummer Stewart Copeland, guitarist Andy Sumner, and vocal/guitarist (and heartthrob) Sting, you couldn't turn your eyes or ears anywhere without bumping into their unique blend of rock, pop, and light reggae. Even more unusual for such a commercially popular outfit, they were just as adored critically — the rare band that no one seemed to dislike. (Heck, even my mom owned their "Synchronicity" album!) The Police were indeed the biggest band in the universe, bar none.

Starring: Stewart Copeland, Sting, Andy Summers
Director: Jim Gable, Jordan Copeland
