While Olanna moves in with her boyfriend, professor Odenigbo, and his young houseboy Ugwu, Kainene finds her feet as a businesswoman and becomes involved with British writer Richard. When the Nigerian Civil War breaks out, however, the sisters' lives are changed forever.
