In Germany in 1912, Frederic, a recent graduate, finds a clerical post in a steel factory. Impressed by him, the elderly owner, Karl Hoffmeister, hires him as his private secretary. His health declining, Karl is confined to his home, into which Frederic moves. There he meets Karl's wife, a much younger woman, the beautiful and reserved Lotte. Over time, Frederic falls deeply in love with her, but does not dare reveal his feelings, and a romantic intrigue develops within the stifling bourgeois home.
