Death in the Garden / La mort en ce jardin (1956)

Adventurer Shark comes to a small village near a diamond-miners' camp, and local police arrest him, accusing him of having committed a bank robbery in a neighboring town. The police also confiscate the diamond mine for the state, which incites the miners to revolt, but they're defeated. Shark, Father Lizzardi, Castin, his daughter, and Djin, a whore Castin loves, flee into the jungle and fight for their lives.

The English factory town is dreary but Joe Lampton has landed a job with a future. To have something to do at night he joins a theatrical group. His boss's daughter Susan is playing ingenue roles on stage and in real life. She is attracted to Joe and Joe thinks about how much faster he will get ahead if he is the boss's son-in-law. This plan is complicated by his strong desire to be with an older woman who also belongs to the theatrical group. She is French and unhappily married. Classic French underworld drama set in Paris at the turn of the century. When Georges Manda (Serge Reggiani) falls for Marie (Simone Signoret), he faces the wrath of her boyfriend, the petty crook Roland (William Sabatier). Gang boss Felix (Claude Dauphin) who secretly lusts after Marie, orders the two to fight it out for her hand, hoping to eliminate his love rival. When his boyhood friend is subsequently framed for the murder, Georges, not realising Felix's involvement, does the decent thing and turns himself in to the police. The tragedy is complete when Georges discovers Felix's role in his downfall, escapes from custody, and kills Felix.
