Takuya Okada is a high school student. He visits his classmate Mamizu Watarase in the hospital. Mamizu suffers from the mysterious ailment "Luminescence disease." People who have the disease show a faint sparkle under the moonlight and the sparkle gets brighter as their death gets closer. Mamizu is not allowed out of the hospital and she will not live long enough to become an adult. Takuya offers to help her carry out her wishes before she passes away. He also tells her how he feels about her, but Mamizu's death is approaching.

Hibiki Akui is a very sensitive 15-year-old girl with a talent for writing. She has grown up in an ordinary family. Her father works as a public officer, her mother a housewife and her older brothers studies at a university. One day, literature magazine "Mokuren" receives a manuscript script for novel "Otogi no Niwa" by Hibiki. The novel is an entry for the literature magazine's Rookie of the Year Award, but the novel does not satisfy certain conditions for the award and is chucked into a garbage can. However, editor Fumi Hanai happens to see the novel "Otogi no Niwa" in the garbage can and she takes an interest in the novel.
