Bill Baker, a kind, sensitive and content man, enjoys life's simple pleasures such as tilling his garden and admiring the butterflies. His seemingly routine life is disrupted by Pavornocturnus – a night terror disorder that causes Bill to commit violent acts while asleep. A doctor tells him this disorder can only be relieved with a unique, dangerous, and mind-altering technology. After a particularly disastrous episode, Bill's loving wife, Emma, leaves him, shattering his world. Now Bill is left with his best friend and trusted colleague, Mac, and the faint hope that one day, Emma will return. Bill wakes up from a coma in a hospital ward, raving about tissue regeneration experiments, final injections, organ transplants and having been cryogenically frozen. Battling flashbacks of his father's death and a car crash, occasional hallucinations and fits of rage he tries to piece together his own history with the help of Ann, a lonely medical psychologist sent in to evaluate whether he should be released. In their confrontational, sexually-charged sessions, Bill flip-flops between pitch-perfect self-diagnoses and his paranoid bio-tech fantasies, but slowly begins to heal. But things are not what they seem.

Train fanatic Tom Stark's job enjoyment stops shielding him from grief over his wife Megan's now terminal cancer when Laura Danner commits suicide by planting her car on the railway just before Tom's train arrives. Tom's colleague Otis, who never got over a hobo doing the same on foot, resigns, Tom is suspended. It's even worse for Laura's fatherless son Davey, who loses his home too. He escapes from a monstrous foster-ma's home and tracks down Tom's home. Megan, who was about to leave without allowing him to get closer again during her last weeks, promises to stay if they take on Davey. Boy and childless couple soon grow on each-other, but a social worker is on Davey's trail.
