Liu is a carefree Beijing native living in the US in a caravan while making a living doing odd jobs such as working for a film company and selling life insurance. He comes across Li who is an old acquaintance and just arrived in the US. Li cannot speak any English and appears to be totally out of her depth so Liu buys her a ticket back to Beijing and sees her off at the airport. A year later Liu has a small car crash in a supermarket car park and to his surprise, the other driver is Li. Unbeknown to Liu, Li could not bear to leave the US so she refund her ticket at the airport and has been working hard to build a good life in the US for the last year. Their relationship appears to be cursed because Liu takes Li to a restaurant while it is being held up and they are both robbed. He then arranges for Li to work with him at his friend’s travel agency only to find out after they are arrested that the agency is smuggling Chinese in the US. Unable to face any more bad luck, Li thanks Liu and asks him to forget her and never contact her again. Another year passes and Liu meets Li again after she responds to an add Liu placed in a local newspaper trying to find her. Liu makes his affection and desire for Li very clear to her but she maintains a distance and does not let their relationship progress beyond work and friendship. Liu is determined to win Li’s heart and resorts to desperate measures with predictable consequences.
