In August, 1945, the Soviet Union invaded the area around Sakhalin Island. Tetsu Ezure escaped with her two sons from Sakhalin Island and arrived in Abashiri City, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. What awaited for them was extreme cold weather and famine. They worked very hard. In 1971, Tetsu’s second son Shujiro returns to Japan after finding success in the United States. He visits Abashiri for the first time in 15 years. His mother Tetsu Ezure lives alone there.

Yojira Takita's excellent 2003 samurai epic takes place in Meiji-era Japan, when the few remaining samurai were forced to choose sides and fight for either the Emperor or the Tokugawa Shogunate (a time period familiar to American audiences from THE LAST SAMURAI, but explored with more complexity and nuance here). Kiichi Nakai stars as Kanichiro Yoshimura, a principled Bushido warrior whose difficult decisions and complicated path are skillfully revealed through flashback.

Yojiro Takita directs this witty, understated comedy about the clash between generations and the different facets of love. Naoko (Kayoko Kishimoto) and her 17-year-old daughter Monami are hospitalized after their bus plunges off the edge of a cliff. Just as Naoko is about to die, she manages to transfer her soul to her daughter's body so as not to be separated from her husband Heisuke (Kaoru Kobayashi).

Daigo Kobayashi is a young married cellist who played in an orchestra that has just been disbanded. Suddenly on the street without a job, Daigo decides to move back to his hometown with his wife. There he gets a job as an undertaker. He sees himself as a sort of gatekeeper between life and death. However, Daigo's work is despised by all the people around him. But it is through his relationship with death on a daily basis that Daigo begins to understand what life is really about.
