A strange symbol resembling an inverted 4 appears in the doors of people's houses in Paris, and residents of apartments with unmarked doors are turning up dead. An unemployed man, who reads people's letters and woes in a public park -a "city crier"- begins reading letters announcing the return of the plague. As panic and rumor begin to spread and Parisians start painting the symbol on their own doors to stem the "Black Death" outbreak, Detective Adamsberg and retired professor Decambrais join forces to try solve this mystery.
