The friendship of two men is tested by war, political upheaval, and romantic rivalry. Lt. Franta Slama and a young pilot named Karel Vojtisek flee to England when Nazi Germany invades Czechoslovakia. There they join other Czech exiles in the RAF. Franta narrates retrospectively, from a Czech prison in 1950 where he is being held by Soviet authorities who question his patriotism.
