Ten years of Marianne and Johan's relationship are presented. We first meet them ten years into their marriage. He is a college professor, she a divorce lawyer. They say that they are happily married – unlike their friends Katarina and Peter who openly fight, especially when under the influence of alcohol – but there is a certain detached aloofness in the way they treat each other. In the next ten years, as they contemplate or embark upon divorce and/or known extramarital affairs, they come to differing understandings at each phase of their relationship of what they truly mean to each other. The film deals with the innocence of first love and the transition from youth to adulthood, two of the director-screenwriter's favorite themes, and ones that he would revisit in later works. When Marie (Maj-Britt Nilsson), a prima ballerina, receives an old lover's diary after his death in a tragic accident, she begins to reminisce about the happy summer she spent with Henrik (Birger Malmsten), her first love, on an island near Stockholm. A flashback shows the young couple in a playful, carefree light, full of energy and grace. Since parting from Henrik, Maria has emerged as a sucessful dancer with many admirers and a new suitor, the journalist David Nystrom (Alf Kjellin). But she is dissatisfied with her present life and unable to forget the ardent love she experienced that one fateful summer long ago.

Albert, the owner of a small and tawdry circus, arrives at a small town where he attempts to effect a reconciliation with his wife Agda whom he left for the circus many years previous. She refuses to resume the marriage whilst Albert's lover, Anne, upset at Albert's rejection of her, has a humiliating affair with an actor, Frans. During a performance given by the circus, Frans begins to taunt Albert and, enraged, challenges him to a fight during which he is severely beaten. Deciding that suicide is his only escape he tries to take his own life but fails. As the circus leaves town, the illfated couple find themselves reluctantly and miserably committed to each other.
