A Zed & Two Noughts / Zoo (1985)
Comedy | Drama
The always elliptical Peter Greenaway once again creates a beautiful film-as-puzzle. This tale concerns twin zoologist brothers whose wives are killed in a freak car crash involving a rare swan. The brothers form an unusual and strangely close relationship with Alba, the woman who was driving the car, now an amputee. Preoccupied with death and decomposition, the brothers organise elaborate studies on the decomposition of animals, making time-lapse films of dalmatians and zebras to chart the decay. Cue the scurrying hoards of snails and Michael Nyman's thrilling frenetic score. When Alba herself dies, the twins decide to join her in death, and set about filming their own decaying human bodies. Greenaway's fascination with the Dutch painter Vermeer, is evident in A Zed And Two Noughts, particularly in the lighting.

L'incorrigible / Incorrigible (1975)
Comedy
Victor Vautier is incorrigible: he's in constant motion, working several cons at once, using different names and changing disguises. He's charming and outrageous, incapable of uttering a sentence that isn't embellished or an outright lie. His life goal is to make enough money to build a sea wall to protect Mont-Saint-Michel. Charlotte, a parole officer, shows up: she's young and seems taken in by Victor. He discovers she lives above the Senlus Museum, where her parents are the curators. With two pals he decides to steal a priceless El Greco triptych and then ransom it back to the cultural ministry. What will Charlotte do when she realizes he's used her to make a fortune?

Le dernier métro / The Last Metro (1980)
Drama | Romance
Gérard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve star as members of a French theater company living under the German occupation during World War II in François Truffaut's gripping, humanist character study. Against all odds—a Jewish theater manager in hiding; a leading man who's in the Resistance; increasingly restrictive Nazi oversight—the troupe believes the show must go on. Equal parts romance, historical tragedy, and even comedy, The Last Metro (Le dernier métro) is Truffaut's ultimate tribute to art overcoming adversity.
