Always trying to point out some of the taboos of Japanese Society, presenting ideas and inviting the audience to think about it. Here, August without Emperor seems to be about a train hijacking involving the military & a coup d'etat (to be confirmed). This looks massive, and representative of a "cinema of ideas".

Mie's (Haru) father died during the aftermath of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. One day, she finds a bundle of unsent New Year's cards, which languished there for 28 years.
