Among the idle nobility of 18th Century France, a pair of cold-hearted rivals, the charming Vicomte de Valmont and the beautiful Marquise de Merteuil, amuse themselves and each other by seducing and toying with the affections of those around them. But their games take a surprising turn when Valmont sets his sights on the virtuous Madame de Tourvel, whom he considers his greatest challenge, because she is renowned for virtue and loyalty to her husband. Meanwhile, the Marquise seeks revenge on an ex-lover by attempting to corrupt the virginal Cecile de Volanges, to whom he is engaged.
