One day, a young girl named A-Ri (Byeon Ju-Yeon) appears at her new school wearing a yellow raincoat, even though it is a sunny day. Due to various incidents, all of A-Ri's classmates are frightened of her except for Jo-Kang (Park Geon-Tae). Jo-Kang develops a crush on A-Ri due to her quirky nature and cute appearance. But, just as they get closer, A-Ri disappears. Ten years later and now in high school, Jo-Kang (Cho Seung-Woo) receives a phone call from A-Ri (Kang Hye-Jung). Jo-Kang then goes to meet A-Ri who is now living at a Buddhist temple. She tells Jo-Kang about the ghosts that visits her and she also teaches Jo-Kang English. He soon falls deeper in love with A-Ri and they share their first kiss together. But, just like ten years earlier, A-Ri then suddenly disappears. Five years later, A-Ri and Jo-Kang meet again, but A-Ri informs Jo-Kang that she is leaving for America the next day. Jo-Kang drops A-Ri off at the airport the next day, but they soon meet again in the most unexpected of places.

Taipei, spring 2013. Hsiao Chieh (Li Yi-chieh) visits her 70-year-grandfather, Liu Chi-sheng (Lung Shao-hua), in hospital after he fell of his bike when cycling around the island. As a young man in the late '60s, Chi-sheng was the hottest scriptwriter in the local Hokkien-dialect section of the film industry, sometimes working on seven scripts simultaneously and employed by Hsiao Chih-kao (Liao Jun) at his studio Chih Kao Pictures in Peitou, a northern suburb of Taipei. Hsiao Chieh grew up watching films in a cinema, the Hollywood Theatre, that Chi-sheng owned later in life. His wife, Chiang Mei-yueh (Shen Hai-jung), is now losing her mind, imagining she is Chin Yueh-feng, a popular actress from the '60s. In hospital, Chi-sheng tells Hsiao Chieh stories from the high days of his career. Summer 1969: one of his scripts, secret-agent adventure Spy No. 7 premieres at the Hollywood Theatre, with Hokkien-dialect superstars Wan Pao-lung (Edison Wang) and Chin Yueh-feng (Tien Hsin) in attendance. Chi-sheng first meets the young Mei-yueh (Amber An) – a huge fan of Pao-lung since the hit melodrama, I Love You to My Bones, which Chi-sheng wrote – as she tries to sneak in without a ticket. Chi-sheng later re-meets her when she attends auditions held by the studio, and helps her get a part in the follow-up production, Spy No. 7 on Monster Island. When aged director Li (Chen Ping-nan) dies during production, Chi-sheng is asked to take over by his boss, and he revises the script into "a romantic espionage fantasy epic", Spy No. 7: On the Moon for Love, with Mei-yueh taking on the lead female role when Yueh-feng goes AWOL in a tiff. Chi-sheng and Mei-yueh fall in love, but the days of Hokkien-dialect movies are already numbered as the government decrees that all films should henceforth be made in the Mandarin dialect.

Parvez was born in Lahore, Pakistan, and as a child was asked to study the Holy scriptures through a Maulvi. When the Maulvi started his sermon, Parvez would fall asleep, this lead to the Maulvi devising a unique punishment, which ultimately compelled Parvez to stop attending. When he grew up, his marriage was arranged with Minoo and they immigrated to a small town in Britain, where Parvez started to make a living driving a taxi, and found himself free from all religious activity. 25 years later, Parvez is an alcoholic, still driving a cab, while people who had immigrated after him have their own businesses and are wealthier. Parvez now has a grown son, Farid, who is the apple of his eye, and is to be engaged to Madeleine Fingerhut, who is the daughter of the local Chief Inspector. After the two families' meet, Farid has a sudden change of heart when he notices that the Chief Inspector detests his family, and it slowly dawns on him that he and his girlfriend are quite different, and he cannot be part of a culture that relies solely on filth, porn, is soaked in sex, along with a mix of Caucasian (white) and Jewish propaganda against Islam. He starts reciting the Holy Quran, and asks permission from his dad to invite some religious leaders from Pakistan, after receiving consent, they do arrive to live in Parvez's home. It is here that Parvez will find that Farid has broken off the forthcoming engagement with Ms. Fingerhut, and has become a born again Muslim. His wife, Minoo, has taken to wearing the Hizaab, remains in the kitchen all day, and is not even permitted to sup or dine with her family, while Parvez finds that he cannot even sleep in his bedroom. Things start to heat up when Farid finds out that his dad has been patronizing a prostitute by the name of Beltina, whose real name is Sandra, and he also notes that his dad is her pimp. Then he and his colleagues set about to cleanse this town of its prostitutes – leading to a confrontation between him and his dad – a confrontation that may well split this family forever.
