Paul is a cartoonist who lives with his girlfriend and their little daughter in Montreal in the summer of 1999. His in-laws, the Beaulieus, are a large, joyful clan composed of siblings, grandchildren and a much loved patriarch named Roland who constantly reminds Paul that he has yet to marry his daughter. When Roland fades with ill health, the family bands together and Paul projects his own devotion by doodling several portraits of his ailing father-in-law.

Germain is a trucker experience. When involved in an accident that causes the death of a woman, her world stops spinning and falls into a worrying state. Consumed by guilt, Germain has not the courage to return behind the wheel of his truck. It sinks into a lethargy that concerned his son, Samuel. This then leaves in New Brunswick in search of his brother Alain to return to their childhood home to provide support and comfort to their father.

Denise is a woman of ripe age whose life has recently changed with the divorce from her husband Michel, the relocation to the neighborhood of her youth, and the retirement from her position as financial director in a large company now directed by her son, Alex. An object of contempt by her husband, her son and at her former workplace, Denise desperately clings to them, unable to communicate. This changes when Denise meets her new neighbors who initiate her to the world of poker. Little by little, she submits to the pleasures of the game and substitutes one family for another.
