He is roused by a call for help from his father, suffering from a terminal cancer. He wants to leave Pierre his fortune, amassed dishonestly in real estate. Pierre refuses the money, because he doesn't want any part of the ill-gotten gains. Soon after, a teenager knocks on Pierre's door: it is his daughter, Adèle, whose mother he had abandoned before the girl was born. Pierre denies being her father, but Adèle eventually convinces him. Soon, the reunion with his daughter revives Pierre's will to live. But the past will come back to haunt him.

Fanny loves Marius and is expecting his child, but he has abandoned her and run away to sea without knowing about the baby.
