The North Star / Armored Attack! (1943)
Drama | Musical | Romance | War
When the school year ends, five friends from a small Ukrainian village decide to travel to Kiev. Their trip is cut short when German aircraft attack and their town falls under occupation. While many escape to the hills to form an anti-Nazi resistance group, a German doctor, Dr. Otto Von Harden (Erich von Stroheim), begins to use the children for medical experiments and as sources of blood transfusions for wounded German soldiers. Directed by Lewis Milestone, this story of valiant resistance stars Dana Andrews, Anne Baxter and Walter Huston as the Russian doctor who discovers the nefarious German plot. THE NORTH STAR was re-released in the midst of the Cold War as ARMORED ATTACK! The original references to the allied Russian military were excised and an overtly anti-Communist narration track was added.

Passage to Marseille (1944)
Adventure | Drama | War
Unfolded in a complex flashback-within-flashback structure, this is the story of Jean Matrac, a freedom-loving French journalist who sacrifices his happiness and security to battle Nazi tyranny. The film opens as French liason officer Freycinet, stationed in London, tells Mantrac's story to a British reporter. Freycinet reveals that Mantrac, happily married to Paula, was framed by pro-fascists and sentenced to Devil's Island. Here he engineered a daring escape with such lost souls as Marius, Garou, Petit and Renault. Adrift in a lifeboat, the escapees were picked up by a French vessel commandeered by pro-fascist Major Duval. With the help of Mantrac and the prisoners, the ship's patriotic captain thwarted Duval's evil machinations, enabling Mantrac to continue his battle against Nazism as a member of the RAF.

The English Patient (1996)
Drama | Romance | War
Set in North Africa and Italy during the late 1930's and early '40's, 'The English Patient' is an epic drama of two haunting love stories that unfolds against a background of international upheaval. Through the prism of war, and of love and friendship, various themes — of fidelity, adultery, nationality and betrayals — are dramatized and explored. The story, based on Michael Ondaatje's Booker Prize-winning novel, is told elliptically, through the histories of four characters who find themselves in a ruined monastery in Italy at the end of World War II. Slowly they reveal themselves and, in the process, the true identity of the English patient — the unknown survivor of a plane shot down over the Sahara who lies dying in the monastery — is made clear. Passion fires these stories, whether it is the raw passion between lovers, or the compulsive passion which drives men to explore remote and inhospitable regions, or to pursue across time and countries those they think have wronged them.
