Step Back to Glory / Aspiration and War / Zhi Qi (2013)
Drama | Sport
Most sports involve dashing forward for victory, but tug-of-war requires players take a step back to win. For the girls' tug-of-war team of Jingmei Girls High School, that one crucial step back gave them the victory of a lifetime. Based on a true story, Step Back to Glory is an inspiring story about the Jingmei girls' arduous journey from underdog to becoming a championship team. To stay true to the real story, the filmmakers intentionally chose members of the Jingmei High School tug-of-war team to play themselves. The sole exception is young idol Yao Yao (a.k.a. Kuo Shu Yao), who shows her own growth as an actress with her first film lead role here, playing a student from the countryside determined to prove her worth in the team. Even director Chang Bo Rui had to walk a tough road to get Step Back to Glory made, giving up a comfortable production consultant job to bring the girls' story to the big screen.

Day of the Fight / This Is America: Day of the Fight (1951)
Documentary | Short | Sport
Based on Kubrick's pictorial for Look Magazine (January 18, 1949) entitled "Prizefighter," "Day Of The Fight" tells of a day in the life of a middleweight Irish boxer named Walter Cartier, particularly the day of his bout with black middleweight Bobby James. This 16-minute short opens with a short (about 4 minutes) study of boxing's history, narrated by veteran newscaster Douglas Edwards in a no-nonsense, noir tone of voice. After this, we follow Walter (and his twin brother Vincent) through his day as he prepares for his 10:00 P.M. bout. After eating breakfast, going to early mass and eating lunch, he starts arranging his things for the fight at 4:00 P.M. By 8:00, he is waiting in his dressing room, where he undergoes a mental transformation, turning into the fighting machine the crowd clamors for. At 10:00, he faces James, and soon, he comes out victorious in a short match which was filmed live on April 17th, 1950.

Headmistress Ishihara, the granddaughter of a World War II Nazi collaborator, runs the institution with an iron fist and the enthusiastic help of her sadistic assistant, Ilsa. After arriving at the hellhole, Jubeh soon learns from governor Mifune that his long-lost, younger brother Musashi had also done time there after a murder spree, but had since died mysteriously.
Despite having sworn never to play baseball again, Jubeh is presented with an ultimatum by governor Mifune: join the reformatory team, The Gauntlets, in the national tournament for juvenile inmates, or witness the death of his innocent cellmate Four Eyes (Mari Hoshino). With the knowledge that the death of his brother is somehow connected to the team, Jubeh agrees, and Gauntlet training begins. Their first opponents: the sexy but deadly “psycho butcher girls” of the St. Black Dahlia High School, a team of literal man-killers. And so the splatterific baseball tournament begins, but Jubeh soon learns that he is not only fighting to win the game, but also to save his own life!
